Common Pests

Pests are living organisms that imposes burdens to humans by causing:

1. Damages to crop plants and livestock.
2. Annoyance, injury and death to humans and domesticated animals.
3. Destruction or value depreciation of stored products.

Rodents

Rats and mice can be major public pests to wide range of industries. Norway rat,
roof rat and house mouse are the most common rodents that live in close associations
to humans. These rodents not only have the potential to be annoying and to cause
structural damage, but they also threaten humans’ health.

Flies

Flies are one of the most common disease carrier pests. Many species are collectively
called filth flies, because of their association with potentially contaminated
substrates, such as food wastes, faeces, animal manures and carrion.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches contaminate vast quantities of materials each year and are potential
carriers of diseases. Cockroaches feed from sewers, drains and garbage areas which
bring them in contact with a variety of pathogens including salmonella, typhoid,
hepatitis and tuberculosis.

Ants

Ants are cosmopolitan pests that inhabit residential and commercial buildings. They
have the potential to mechanically transmit diseases. Their propensity to breach
sterile packaging, feed on wounds, and extensively infest large buildings makes
them a public health risk.

Bed Bugs

Residential buildings and hotels are particularly vulnerable to bed bug problems
because of the high-density human populations. Each person is a potential source of
bed bugs hitchhiking on personal belongings. Bed bugs poses high risk to hotels
through causing allergies, carrying diseases, and damaging business’s reputation.

Stored Product Insects

Stored Product Insects are a huge group of pests such as beetles and moths. They are
responsible for the contamination and the destruction of food and goods every year.
The presence of pests -dead or alive- poses significant health risks. Regardless of the
infestation’s size, a pest problem is not a situation to be taken lightly.
